2022-23 Annual Reflection Template

A high-leverage structure for holiday reflection

I've written before about the value of liminal space, that sacred time between things, so it'll be no surprise when I say that the holidays -- the world's collective liminal space -- are my favorite time of year.

Every December I spend a few hours to reflect, and align myself toward the upcoming year I want to create. It's such a powerful process that I started sharing it with clients, and for the first time last year, with subscribers to the I-O newsletter. And this year, we've fully updated the review with seven of the most high leverage exercises I use with clients every day.

I'm really proud to share this with you. I hope it helps you dive deep during your own liminal space, and if you find it valuable, I hope you'll consider sharing it with those close to you.

So without further ado, I present the 2022-23 Inside-Out Annual Review

With love,

Ryan

About this year’s annual reflection template

Inside each of us is the work we’re meant to do. The gift we’re meant to give to the world. The story we’re meant to tell. Most of the time we’re too busy to pay attention, but every year around this time the world takes a breath, slows down, and gives us the opportunity to access this gift. It’s on us to take advantage of that opportunity.

The 2022-23 Annual Reflection is a journey of structured reflection, designed to help you:

  • Mine maximum insights, lessons and awareness from your experiences in 2022.

  • Explore what is most important to you, from the most powerful perspective available to man.

  • Discover any areas in which your current ways of being are misaligned with what you say is important.

  • Clarify and crystallize what success means to you in 2023, and develop a plan to achieve that success without setting yourself up for burnout.

Be warned, the exercises contained herein are challenging.

They’re supposed to be.

Things I read this week

One: Imagine truly reconnecting with your inner child (Michelle Huang)

This needs to turned into a product. Michelle trained an AI chatbot on her childhood diaries and engaged in real-time dialogue with her "inner child". Absolutely incredible and fascinating to read.

Two: Leadership as Professional Practice (Ed Batista)

Ed talks about the reality of leadership being a constant process - one full of trial, error, and lots of practice. Priorities aren't necessarily what you spend the most time on, but what you give preference to.

Three: Sailing In The Present Towards The Future (Steve Schlafman)

Steve's got a really cool take here on balancing your present with your future, which will be useful to anyone trying to balance presence with ambition (story of my life).
